Kinds of gates

  • Walk gate: a single gate about 4 feet wide. Wider if a mower has to fit through.
  • Drive gate: a single or double swing gate across a driveway.
  • Slide gate: rolls or cantilevers sideways. The answer when there’s no room for a gate to swing.

Why gates sag

Gate trouble almost always starts at the post. A gate hangs its whole weight off one post, so gate posts need to be heavier and set deeper than line posts. A diagonal brace or adjustable cable keeps the frame square.

Automatic gate openers

Drive gates can be fitted with swing or slide operators, on AC power or solar. Access options include remotes, keypads and phone-based entry. If you want an opener, say so in your request. Gate size, weight, power at the gate and how often it cycles all decide which operator fits.

Have this ready

The opening width from post to post, whether the ground slopes, the fence material it ties into, and whether there’s power near the gate.

Questions

How wide should a drive gate be?

Most driveways take a 12 ft opening. Go wider for trailers, boats or a tight turn into the drive. Measure the paved width and add room for mirrors.

Single or double drive gate?

A double gate splits the weight across two posts and needs less swing room on each side. A single gate is simpler to automate. Slide gates need no swing room at all.

Can I add an opener to a gate I already have?

Often, yes. The gate has to swing freely, be square, and hang on posts that can take the load.
